undersized ground on the MPS vaporizes during

   magnet quench

The trashcan here holds the remants of the power cable for the Magnet Power Supply for an OR32 1.5T magnet in Arkansas. The engineers were attempting to ramp the magnet up when it quenched near full field strength (~600A).

The installers had not put the proper grounds in place, so the magnet attempted to quench 600A across the #12 ground wire in the power cable. Of course, the ground wire immediately vaporized.

The magnet continued to quench across all available ground points including the braided steel jackets on the gas lines to the coldhead which melted near the filterplates!

All of the missing filters in this picture were destroyed during the quench event.

As the two followup pictures show, they learned from the experience and installed oversized grounds to avoid a repeat.
